This one was so much fun we had tell the story again.

  In July og ‘06 I was listening to the radio on my way to work and the DJ was talking about a video of a Marine singing a song. He said that he couldn’t find the video anywhere so he asked for help from the listeners. Since I’m always eager to help I did some searching when I got to work, found the video, and posted it on one of my websites. I sent this link to the DJ and he thanked me for helping him out and gave my website a shout out.

  After that I noticed that traffic to my site was through the roof. I didn’t really seem to mind since I have the bandwidth to handle it, but then I noticed something. From checking my logs there were a lot of people linking directly to this video. So I started researching where the hits were coming from. I found about 4 users on Myspace that had linked to my video through their profile. With this every time someone opened their profile the video would start playing thus pulling bandwidth from my site. Now everyone knows that if you’re going to use a video from someone else’s website you should at least give them props. If they had given me a link on their page to my main website it would have been fine. But instead, they wanted to let me host it for them, let them use it and not get anything in return.

  To get back at them and the other sites hot linking to the video. I ran a contest in my forums to see who could come up with the most disgusting video. I got a few really nasty ones but at the end of it all we had made our decision. I named the file the same as the original and uploaded it to my server. Now whenever someone clicked on the person’s profile the new video would show up. I copied the code from one of the users so you could view what happened. This user only had it on there for a few hours before he removed it. Still pretty damn funny though.
